First game: The Legend of Zelda (1986)

Leevers are recurring enemies in The Legend of Zelda franchise, and they first appear in the first The Legend of Zelda game. Leevers are living, mutated plants usually encountered in desert areas, such as deserts and sandy shores.

Enemy information

Physical appearance

Leever have a stubby, tube-like body, with blade- or leaf-like protrusions on the top that may either rigidly stick out or hang down loosely.

Leevers have appeared in various colors: the first The Legend of Zelda has blue and red Leevers; Zelda II: The Adventure of Link has light-blue Leevers; The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past has green and purple Leevers with loose orange protrusions; and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask have green Leevers with light green rigid, and red loose protrusions.

Behavior

Leevers are frequently encountered in groups. They attack by digging out of the ground a distance from Link, then charging straight at him at high speed, and then burrowing back under the ground. Leevers repeat this action by showing up from random locations, as long as Link is in the general vicinity onscreen.

Main series appearances

The Legend of Zelda

In The Legend of Zelda, both blue and red Leevers are encountered in the area surrounding Hyrule's central lake, or in the desert lining Death Mountain. Before a Leever emerges from the sand, the area where they are about to emerge from begins to shake. Red Leevers tend to pop up closer to their target and charge right in, whilst blue Leevers come up a little farther away, and wander around a bit more rather than charge directly.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Leevers appear in only light-blue varieties, and can be found in sandy areas in the eastern part of Hyrule.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Leevers appear in teal and purple varieties, and they are encountered in the Desert Palace. The purple Leevers are stronger than their teal counterparts.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Leevers no longer have distinct color variations, due to the Game Boy's monochromatic palette, but are colored red in both the Game Boy Color version, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, and in the Nintendo Switch remake.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, there are small, green Leevers encountered in the Haunted Wasteland and near the Desert Colossus. The small, green Leevers often appear in a group, surround Link, and charge at him all at once. A Leever can be quickly defeated from a Spin Attack. But they appear so often that is usually easier to just pass them by. Every once in a while, a bigger and stronger, yet slower purple Leever appears.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, the same green Leevers from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time appear. Leevers have the same behavior as before, except for seldomly appearing in groups, but they were made larger. Leever on the west side of Termina Field and around Great Bay.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages

In The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, Leevers again return in blue and red varieties, the former being the stronger type.

In The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, blue Leevers are encountered in the Woods of Winter, Eyeglass Lake, Goron Mountain, and Natzu Wasteland. Red Leevers are less common, appearing only in the Woods of Winter and Eyeglass Lake. Woods of Winter is unique in that it is the first instance of Leevers not appearing in a desert environment. Aside from red and blue Leevers, the game uniquely has orange Leevers, encountered in Samasa Desert.

In The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, both red and blue Leevers appear on Crescent Island and in present-day Rolling Ridge Base, another environment without sand. Talus Peaks is different in that red Leevers appear in present day, while blue ones appear in the past.

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

In The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Leevers are encountered in red and blue varieties, but both types have a light gray body. Red Leevers are encountered at the Wind Ruins, while blue ones are near Veil Falls.
