First game: Donkey Kong Country (1994)
Real-world inspiration: Rhinoceros
Species: Rhinoceros

Rambi is one of the main Animal Friends who assists Donkey Kong on his many adventures. He first appears in Donkey Kong Country.

Character information

Physical appearance

Rambi is a gray rhinoceros with a white horn on the front.

Strengths and weaknesses

Rambi is a powerful rhinoceros who can defeat almost any enemy in his path as he stampedes along the way. Rambi's horn is capable of breaking open fragile walls. Rambi has a vulnerability to fire, something that was established in Donkey Kong Country Returns, but he can still take damage from the fire emitted from Oil Drums in Donkey Kong Country. Aside from fire, the spiky Mincers in Donkey Kong Country can also damage Rambi.

Locations

Rambi is found in a variety of environments, such as the jungle level Jungle Hijinxs in Donkey Kong Country or the pirate ship level Pirate Panic in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. He is imprisoned in an Animal Crate, specifically a Rambi Crate, which Rambi can be freed from if one were to jump onto it.

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2, a few levels have an Animal Barrel, more specifically a Rambi Barrel, that transforms the Kongs into Rambi himself. They continue to have Rambi's appearance until crossing a No Animal Sign, which turns them back to normal, much like any other Animal Friend that can be transformed into.

Donkey Kong game appearances

Donkey Kong Country series

Donkey Kong Country

In Donkey Kong Country, Rambi made his first appearance. Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong first encounter Rambi in the first level, Jungle Hijinxs, where Rambi is found just past the Star Barrel (i.e. the level's checkpoint). Whenever Rambi takes damage, he moves away from Donkey Kong and Diddy, just as three of the other mountable Animal Friends—Enguarde, Winky, and Expresso—do.

Like other mountable Animal Friends, Rambi can exit the level with Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, but he cannot continue on over to the next level with them.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Rambi returns as an Animal Friend, this time assisting both Diddy and his girlfriend Dixie on their journey to rescue Donkey Kong from the game's main antagonist, Kaptain K. Rool. Similar to Donkey Kong Country, Rambi is first found in the first level, specifically Pirate Panic. There is a No Animal Sign at the end that if crossed by Rambi, causes him to disappear. Certain levels feature an Animal Barrel of Rambi, i.e. a Rambi Barrel, that transforms Diddy and Dixie into Rambi if they jump into it.

Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Color)

In Donkey Kong Country for the Game Boy Color, Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong can only transform into Rambi by jumping into his cage, something likely inspired by Donkey Kong 64, as Donkey Kong could transform into Rambi in said game.

In the Crosshair Cranky stage Buddies Beware!, Rambis are among the species whom the player must safely guide away from the large Gnawties following after them.

Donkey Kong Land series

Donkey Kong Land

In Donkey Kong Land, Rambi and Expresso are the only two Animal Friends to assist Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong on their journey.

Donkey Kong Land 2

In Donkey Kong Land 2, Rambi returns as an Animal Friend, although because only Animal Barrels appear, Diddy or Dixie can no longer ride Rambi.

Donkey Kong 64

In Donkey Kong 64, Rambi's only appearance in Adventure mode is within an Animal Crate of him that Donkey Kong can jump into to transform into Rambi. Similarly, only Lanky Kong can transform into Enguarde the swordfish in Gloomy Galleon.

Mario game appearances

Mario Kart DS

Rambi does not physically appear in Mario Kart DS, but he is depicted on one of Donkey Kong's karts, the Rambi Rider.
